*eLife opens science to the public with new podcast series*

CAMBRIDGE, UK | July 17, 2013

eLife, the new open-access journal for outstanding research in the life and
biomedical sciences, has partnered with The Naked Scientists to produce a
podcast that will bring scientific results published in the journal to a
wider audience.

As an open-access venture, eLife works to put key scientific findings in
the hands of more and different audiences =96 and to make reports more
inviting, engaging, and interactive. eLife extends that effort today
through partnership with The Naked Scientists, an award-winning team of
broadcasters whose aim is to promote science to the general public.

The first episode of the eLife podcast features interviews with the authors
of five research articles that have been selected to reflect the quality
and breadth of the science published in eLife since the journal was
launched last year. These papers include: the discovery of a receptor for
the hepatitis B and D viruses; research into the effects that fog has on
car drivers; and the use of modern DNA sequencing technology to learn more
about the origins of the potato famines of the 1840s. eLife deputy editor,
Professor Fiona Watt of King=92s College London, also explains how the
journal is seeking to drive change in the world of scientific publishing.

Episodes are freely accessible online and available to use and distribute
under a Creative Commons Attribution License.

=93Important discoveries such as those published in eLife are relevant to a
lot of people,=94 said Randy Schekman, eLife editor-in-chief. =93The Naked
Scientists have a committed following and a knack for making complicated
stories accessible and interesting. Since our journal is freely available
online, anyone listening to the eLife podcast will be able to read the full
papers anytime.=94

The eLife podcast is the newest addition to the journal=92s suite of tools =
to
take open-access content farther on the web, which includes: the eLife
digest, a short, plain-language summary prepared for every paper; Insights,
expert commentaries solicited for select articles; and the eLife
developer=92s resource and API, where metadata for all eLife content maybe
openly accessed, reused, and built upon.
